CLARICE ASSAD

UPCOMING COMMISSIONS

- Fundação OSESP: I'm very excited to announce that I have been commissioned by OSESP to write an overture for the orchestra's 2013 season. Also, the Harris Guitar Foundation is funding a new concerto for guitar and chamber orchestra, to be premiered in 2014.

Albany Symphony Commission:
Clarice Assad will serve as the orchestra’s Composer-Educator partner, curating a major educational project with a local school during her residency, and will join the orchestra for a performance of her Concerto for Scat-Singer, Piano and Orchestra in May. The season's opening concert will feature a newly commissioned work by Ms. Assad.

A GOOD START IN 2013 !

There is so so much to be grateful for, and I would love to start out by thanking the magnificent mandolinist Alon Sariel and the fantastic quartet (Kana Sugimura, Aleksandra Szurgot - Violins Anna Szulc-Kapala - Viola) for their unbelievably great performance of my piece OBRIGADO for mandolin and strings. OBRIGADO is not enough ! :)

New Century's Clever Solos for the Seasons

BY DAVID BRATMAN
San Francisco Classical Voice
"Regular NCCO composer Clarice Assad provided an equally clever show with a work cheekily titled Suite for Lower Strings, based on themes of Bach. The kick in the title lies in its dismissal of the upper strings, the violins, even though the full string orchestra played. Read More

An even more ambitious concerto grosso was Clarice Assad’s suite for lower strings. This turned the tables on Vivaldi’s prioritizing the violin by allocating all of the solo work to individual violas and cellos (along with the one NCCO bass), employing the entire violin section only for purposes of accompaniment. Assad’s suite “made up the difference,” which allowed Salerno-Sonnenberg to make her claim that everyone got a solo turn. It also provided an opportunity for an ironic twist on music history. "The program's first half closed with the Suite for Lower Strings based on themes by Bach, by Brazilian-born Clarice Assad, who was New Century's featured composer during its 2008-09 season. It's an inventive and lively piece, grabbing fragments of melodies from the master, splicing and dovetailing them, creating something shimmery and festive… "
